Wintermorph
WINTERMORPH is a Black/Post-Black Metal band from Russia. This is the duo's debut release. The EP has three songs, and the title track is the first. The sound is dark, and powerful. The vocals are fairly standard for the genre, but the riffing is different. You don't get that wall of sound from the guitars. This could be where the Post elements come into play. The bass is also audible, something that you don't often get from Black Metal. The underlying chugs in the riff keep the sound dangerous. The sound drops towards the end as well, but picks up again towards the end.
"Ashes" is a bit longer, and begins with eerie tones, before the main riff comes bursting in. The sound is solemn. The riff is smoother in this song, but with edgy peaks. There is an Industrial, mesmerizing tinge to it as well. The closing tones are more subtle, and cloudy. "Trails" closes the three-song EP. A murder of crows opens the song. Crows are thought to symbolize transformation and change. There are others who believe the crow can exist in two worlds. They are strange, but intriguing creatures. The song here has some mysterious qualities, and the vocals are backed with effects.
Overall, although only three songs long, the album has promise. One thing the Black Metal band doesn't do is recycle the old formulas into their sound. Instead, they break off on their own, and create something personal. Although the riffing is fairly simple, it is effective at getting the message across. Darkness likes in this deep sea, and it's ready to consume the listener without warning.
