Winter Willow - Existentiell Vånda album cover

From their EPK, "Melancholy meets euphoria on the first full-length album by WINTER WILLOW. As life's emptiness is reflected in the intimate vocals and personal lyrics, the music takes the listener on a journey through nostalgia and emptiness in a dynamic soundscape of raw, monotonous guitars, bombastic drums, rumbling bass and haunting melodies." The album has six songs. "Besviken pa Livet" is the first. Clean, solemn guitars open the song, with a slow pace. If this music is meant to make you feel bad, they have accomplished that. Spoken words are raw, and vital. As it continues, layers are added, making the desolate sound even worse. "Självmordstankar till Morgonkaffet" begins with charming but sober piano and keyboard notes. The simple melody will hit you right in the gut, and suddenly you begin to feel the regrets in your life rise back to the surface. The vocals are dripping with tears, as he cries out to anyone who will listen. You can literally taste his tears and feel his pain.

"Kosmik Psykos" is an extended eight-minute song, with a bit of a heavier and darker opening sequence. The vocals are tortured, but at times he calms, but these moments of levity are few and far between. The sound grows increasingly dark towards the end, with more screams to finish you off. "Medvetet Olycklig" has multiple voices in the beginning, with a somber sound. Again, as the song moves forward, that feeling in the pit of your gut grows stronger. The sound takes a sharp turn at the half-way mark, with more energetic and animated tones. This is the euphoria they talk about.

"Frusen In i Själen" is much more melancholy and depressive. Clean guitars march in strongly after the spoken words. I get a mixed bag of emotions here...some real despondent tones, but also a pinch of hope. Although, the subject will lose his battle to his demons in the end. "I en Värld av Ensamhet" closes the album. Talk about gut-wrenching. If this song doesn't do you in, nothing will. The subject crawls down the stairs into the darkness, never to return to the light. Melancholic? Definitely. Euphoric? There were hints of this, but the depressive qualities of the music were much stronger on the album. If you are finally able to feel good about yourself after a lifetime of battles with various demons, I would not recommend that you play this album. But if you are a well-adjusted person, go for it. In either case, the pain jumps off the pages and into your soul.
