Homebrewed Recordings
Willfire

WILLFIRE is a band from Järvenpää, Uusimaa, which is in Finland. They play pure straight forward old fashioned Heavy Metal, and have done so since 1998. In all honesty, I wouldn't have placed them from that country, and I will tell you why further along the review. Musically, in the first thirteen years of their existence they released six EP's. no demos, no studio recordings, nothing. And now, some fourteen years after having last given us a taste of their music, they are back with "Homebrewed Recordings". And as we all know, home brewing can produce varying results. Plus, as they always say; results from the past are no guarantee for the future.
Like I mentioned before in some of my reviews, I never investigate a band when I choose who I would like to review. That does result in a surprise or two along the way. Some in the positive, but also some in the negative. But my train of thought was that when it came to Heavy Metal, I just couldn't go wrong. Well, that is me being told off, as I fear that I just can't help but finding WILLFIRE very unsatisfactory on "Homebrewed Recordings". And that is rare for a Finnish band, because they usually provide us with good quality music, in every genre. My disappointment has a few reasons. First off, the music is not only bog standard, it is lacking conviction and persuasion. It's all very much restricted. Another reason are the very disappointing vocals. As far as I'm concerned, they wouldn't even pass a demo inspection, let alone an official release through a record company.
But what really takes the cake is the fact that the band is unable to keep a tempo in the right way. It feels as if I've put these digital files on my knackered and in need of reparation analogue turntable which is swaying from fast to slow and vice versa. It just diminishes the pleasure I usually have when listening to Heavy Metal. On "Field Of Sorrow" this becomes extra prevalent, and it's almost embarrassing to listen to. I don't know if the drummer was drunk or that he just can't keep a steady tempo, but this is excruciatingly bad. It is very unusual for me to have to admit, but I very much doubt all the people who signed this version of WILLFIRE. This is "Homebrewed Recordings" that is unfit for human consumption. But please, don't put your pets through this torture either!
