White Stones - Kuarahy album cover

To play Technical Death Metal is to be Avant-garde sometimes, but it can become a boring experience. Obviously that some names as EDGE OF SANITY always are welcome, because they create something that is extreme and progressive at the same time, but always with those coherent hooks that enable the fans to create a synergic link with the band. But there's a point that no one would pass for the sake of the listeners, and the Spanish trio WHITE STONES did such thin on "Kuarahy", their first release.

Well, this an album that was done for fans of Technical Death Metal, with all those technical ambiance and broken tempos, but the need to be experimental and Avant-garde went beyond the right point, and it's truly difficult for a fan to create a bond with their work. It's not bad, but the technical/experimental approach turned the things sour for those that are just listeners of music, and not musicians. It's aggressive, with a Jazz insight on the playing of the instruments, and heavy, but extreme difficult to be assimilated.

The sonority of "Kuarahy" was done created by the hands of Martín Méndez (recording, production) and Jaime Gomez Arellano (mixing, mastering), and the final result is a combination of that harsh and raw feeling that is usual from the genre with a dry outfit to make the instruments understandable. It's not a 100% hit in the target, but it's very good.

On their songs, the band presents a musical work hard to be assimilated by the senses due its technical/experimental insight, but good ideas can be heard on "Rusty Shell" (the insane bass playing is incredible), "Worms" (another fine work from bass guitar, but the drums does a good work as well), "Guyra", "Ashes" (very good guitars are presented on this one), and "Taste of Blood", but this isn't enough to make things better for those (as written above) that just want to hear music and enjoy a good time. And this aspect points for a band that needs to mature a bit more.

WHITE STONES isn't a bad band at all, but they need to focus their musical efforts on creating songs, and not on individual technique shows as can be heard on "Kuarahy". Maybe they can balance things better on their next release.
