What A Time To Be Alive
Werewolves

Australia has been producing some really interesting and brutal bands in the recent years, in all styles, no doubt. I particularly like the Doom, Technical Death Metal, Grindcore and Black Metal ones... the scene is definitely extreme, and this band is made up of extreme metal masterminds that have proven themselves worthy of admiration. To my delight, WEREWOLVES serves Technical Black Death Metal with Grindcore sauce, bloody raw. Oh, what a feast! Just like the one on the cover artwork!
"1,2,3,4, I don't like you, I fucking hate you." That's how you open up record like this! Be ready to get your mind blown away. "I Don't Like You" is pure hate transformed into music. Most of the time the pace is very fast, technical riffing backed by blast beats, a superb mixture of Grindcore and Black Metal at their most violent point. There are lots of riff changes and great drumming all over the album. "Sublime Wartime Voyeurism" is the second offering on this filthy menu. Straight into grind mode with blasting beats and vocal changes between growls and screams that later blend together along thrashy riffing till the two-minute mark, where after a short change of pace the songs turns into Black Metal mode, with a taste of Post Black to it, then gradually returns to grinding madness. "My piss is radioactive!!!"
A bit straighter into Technical Death/Grind, "Mission Statement" left a CARCASS aftertaste and "Unfathomably Fucked" once again has that Black Metal spice here and there that adds up greatly to the variants in the songs, something even more noticeable in "They Will Pay with Their Own Blood", the only track where the pace slows down a bit for a while (and one of my favorites). I mean, you start a song basically listening to Grindcore, then go through Black Metal, then Death/Doom and back to Grind, all nicely stitched body parts of a demonic beast.
"Antisocial" somehow made me think of NASUM on song composition, pissed-off to the core. Another name that came to mind while listening to this album is GOREROTTED, as there are parts where the grindcore style and vocals are very similar to the early days of the U.K. grinders. The technicality and precision that these guys display in songs like "Traitors and Bastards" will keep you in awe. "Crushgasm" and "A Plague on All Your Horses" are a direct injection of adrenaline.
I have been blown away by this record and I have found many elements that stand out which I also find in some of my favorite bands, the great sound of those thrashy riffs like LEGION OF THE DAMNED has, the precise and impressive drumming of PSYCHROPTIC (don't be surprised, both bands share the same drummer), the violent vocals of GOREROTTED, the innovative extremity of ANAAL NATHRAKH, all nuclear bomb fuel for sure. Don't miss out on this one.
