Awakening of the Ancient Blood
WeissRavana
WEISSRAVANA are a unique Melodic Death Metal/Blackened Deathcore reformists. They integrate subtle melodies, thrashing speed, modern heaviness and brutal riffs with complex and intellectual structures at an advanced level. The group takes the essential elements from a variety of music and integrate them with their compositions in an immaculate balance. Moreover, a darker kind of fantasy in urban and futuristic worldview, is one of the material prerequisites to elucidate the uniqueness of the band. This worldview is the common concept of the band, both visually and sonically in all their work, by emphasizing the dark elements of fantasy such as myths and fairy tales and incorporating them with the mundane where mankind inhabit." This is their debut album, and it has five songs.
"Cliffed by the Follis" is the first. This song is quite different than other MDM bands I have heard. The vocals are deadly and guttural, but a sparkling melody runs behind the evil grunts and utterances. Talk about a dichotomy, this is about as far apart as it gets. The backing melody is almost video-game like it its application. "Awakening of the Ancient Blood" begins with lovely piano notes and backing keyboards that create this dream state. Again, the vocals are absolutely deadly. They vary from harrowing screams and filthy guttural and back and forth again, but this band knows how to ride out the melody. The turning speeds on the curves are like the sound is on rails...just hooked in.
"Tears in Obscurity" begins with piano and keyboard notes and some solemn spoken words. There is a tension and ominous tones in the music, but it is bested by the very pretty melodies. "The Blaze Birth for RE:grade" is faster and skips off the ground with a blistering pace. The vocals are unintelligible, which creates some of the charm. Some of the screams are off the charts in terms of how high they go. "Teaser Song" might be the album teaser, because it's very short, and also packed full of great atmosphere. This Japanese duo are onto something new and different here. Many bands in this genre struggle with the "melodic" side of things but nail the "death" side all too well. My explanation is that many "Metalheads" are afraid of too much melody and catchy sounds in their music. But take a moment to appreciate what this album represents because it has the ardent Metal qualities that you want, and a whole lot of melody as well.
