Watch Them Fail
From their EPK, "Founded in 2016 in Graz/Austria, the four musicians of WATCH THEM FAIL have been consistently and unconsciously avoiding to put themselves into a specific music genre. The individual band member's influences are too different and too far spread out in order to be reduced to one musical formula. The only constant in the music of WATCH THEM FAIL is the catchiness of their songs, which manifests itself in either the listeners head and/or legs, where it settles for good." The album has ten songs.
"Splitternachkt" is the first. The opening tones are keyboard laden, then comes in some semi-harsh vocals sung in German? The tones are quite a bit odd, and somewhat depressing, and it takes on a bit of an Alternative sound. "Disco Vivante" is quite a bit shorter, and again with a really odd sound. It's not the fact that the song is sung in a different language, although that plays a role. The cadence of the vocals is what I have the largest concern with, and the simply riffing. "Machine Gun Blues" begins with thick bass notes. From there, the sound is a bit more melancholy, and somewhat tense. Through four songs so far, I am not sure what to call this, but it is not very pleasing to me.
"Salem" opens with more electronica. From there however, it's another strange sound. The verses are almost tinged with Industrial tones, and perhaps it's the changing form minor to major chords at times that don't make sense that is my biggest concern. "A Matter of..." features yet another odd sound of electronics with overly elementary riffs and grating vocals. At this point it is safe to say that this isn't my cup of tea. "Body Lies" is the first single from the album and might be my favorite song...that is, until the overly simple riffs. The keys in the chorus are nice, and I wish there were more of them The title track closes the album. A smooth, mellow sound opens the song, with spoke words. Then comes in the depressing, strange sounds. It's almost as if the elements are from two separate songs, because the transitions are pretty bad.
Lately, WormHoleDeath has been a bit spotty in their metal offerings. I typically like a lot of what they have on their label, but this album just did not connect with me at all. Categorizes as "Progressive Metal," it's much more of an Alternative Metal sound to me, and the vocals are one of the worst qualities. Although the production was good, I didn't find much here that I liked.
