Wastefall - Self Exile album cover

This is the third studio album from a band that managed to create a lot of noise around their name here in Greece in their short period of existence. The fact that they have opened for the one and only Black Sabbath but also sign a deal with U.S. based Sensory Records (a label known for its good taste on progressive or bizarre music) says a lot about their dynamics.
Their two previous records where released from Greek based Sleaszy Rider. Their debut in 2003 Fallen Stars And Rising Scars and the follow up Soulrain 21 in 2004 made an impact on the Greek market (but not on abroad due to luck of distribution) while both albums where praised by the majority of the press. So it was only a matter of time (and hard work of course) for the band to cross paths with a bigger and foreign label.
Self Exile is a turn in the band's music ideology. Once again heavily influenced (but not copy / pasting) by bands such as Pain Of Salvation (a band obviously used as a point of reference when it comes to talk about Wastefall) but this time with a much more focused opinion about their music. In this album we witness an attempt by the band to follow a more modern approach when it comes to song writing. First of all they have drop out the violin use of their two previous albums. Yes this was a distinct feature of Wastefall but like it or not it didn't really helped making their music heavier but rather giving a more personal feeling. The compositions also sound mature and more solid. One of the biggest problems (in my opinion) of the previous albums was the band's inability to craft songs with beginning / midsection / end. The other problem on both previous releases was the average sound (Greek standard)... well I guess the name of Tommy Hansen (Helloween, TNT, Jorn Lande etc.) sets the record straight offering a powerful mix and mastering.
The third album of Wastefall marks a big step up for the band. Let's hope they got what it takes in order to look in the eyes known international acts. Fans of modern (and a bit progressive) metal check it out.
