Fires Of The Forgotten

Internal Decay

“Fires Of The Forgotten” is a continuation of the grim Death Metal sound of INTERNAL DECAY's first album with more focus on doom-laden melodies.

INTERNAL DECAY hailing from Stockholm, Sweden were formed in 1991. The Death Metal outfit were active until 1994 and re-formed in 2023. During their first active period, they released their debut album in 1993. Since 2023, "Fires Of The Forgotten" is their first release and their debut EP. "Fires Of The Forgotten" was mixed and mastered by bassist Linus Virbrant. It has a length of about 17 minutes, and it was released via Dutch Thrash, Power, and Death Metal specialists Hammerheart Records. The EP starts with the title track, and it is introduced by powerful guitar riffs at a measured tempo. After a short introduction, it transitions into a verse part at mid-tempo. The vocals are growls and they vary between the deep to medium end of the guttural range. The melodies are grim and doom-laden throughout the track. The choruses slow down to a measured tempo and a sluggish rhythm with the melodies having some melancholic features. The track is a bit of a mixture of Death and Doom Metal with a few Gothic twists during the chorus parts. "Fires Of The Forgotten (Dance Upon Your Grief)" was released as lyric video, and the YouTube link is provided below.

"A Demon's Bow" starts with a tension-building piano intro, leading into the verse part at a measured tempo. The guitar riffing is devastating. The tempo varies between measured tempo and mid-tempo during the verses. The melodies are blood-freezing, and the piano is a recurring feature throughout the track. Some bits and pieces of both songs remind me of the early 90s period of PARADISE LOST. A good example is the whole middle part of "A Demon's Bow" including the short lead guitar solo. The track finally ends with the piano. The EP closes with "Dying Wish" and it starts with the same grim sound as the previous tracks. The guitar riffing is thunderous at a measured tempo and a sluggish rhythm. During the choruses, the tempo leans more towards mid-tempo, while the vocals have higher pitched backing vocal support. The melodies are once again spine-chilling, and Doom Metal inspired. My PARADISE LOST flashbacks reoccur also during listening to "Dying Wish". There are a few more mid-tempo parts with direct guitar riffing towards the end of the track, which makes it more interesting to listen to.

INTERNAL DECAY released their first new songs after more than 30 years and after the re-release of their 1993 album "The Forgotten Dream" last year. "Fires Of The Forgotten" is a continuation of the grim Death Metal sound of their first album with more focus on doom-laden melodies. The sound on the EP is a mixture of modern Death and Doom Metal and goes into a darker melodic direction than the debut album. The EP is well produced. INTERNAL DECAY are back and this is good news for fans of Death/Doom Metal fans.
