Rise Of Independence

Warfield Within

“Rise Of Independence” is a smart mixture of Death and Thrash Metal delivered with direct and punishing guitar riffs, double-bass attacks, and aggressive growling vocals

WARFIELD WITHIN hailing from Mönchengladbach, Germany were formed in 2005. They remained active until 2013 and then from 2019 onwards. They play a mixture of Thrash Metal and Death Metal. So far, they released two full-length albums and one EP. Their third full-length album "Rise Of Independence" has a length of about 33 minutes, and it was recorded, mixed, and mastered by WARFIELD WITHIN. The album is an independent release, and no video has been released so far. The album starts fast and furious. "King" is an aggressive track with tight guitar riffing, plenty of pace intensified by double-bass drumming and a few blast-beats. The vocals are growls and vary around the medium end of the guttural range with a few tonal shifts towards higher pitched notes. The chorus parts of the track slow down to mid-tempo with powerful guitar riffs. "King" is a strong opening track. The title track maintains the pace and aggression of "King", where the verse parts are accompanied by plenty of double-bass drumming. The guitar riffs are punishing. The track develops into a mixture of fast and mid-tempo parts with dark melodies. "Hecate" slows down to a measured tempo with devastating guitar riffs supported by the double-bass. The vocals are distinctly deeper growls compared to the previous tracks and that adds to the darkness of the track. The melodies are chilling throughout the song. There is a short break with an abrupt change in tempo and rhythm introduced by the blast-beats towards crazy pace. However, the track quickly circles back to another verse and chorus part.

While "Hecate" is clearly Death Metal inspired, "Chatterbox" leans more towards Thrash Metal with some Death Metal twists. It is a fast and aggressive track most of the time with flesh-ripping guitar riffs, supported by the double-bass drumming. The vocals are deep-lying growls with some tonal shifts. "Chatterbox" is one of the album highlights.  "Three Of Swords" starts with powerful guitar riffs and plenty of double-bass drumming leading into the verse part. It is a mixture of fast verse parts and mid-tempo choruses. The choruses are almost anthemic. One feature of the album sound is a certain monotonicity in the riffing, the vocals, and the melodies. This often raises the aggression level of the tracks. "Sick Nation" adds a bit more complexity to the guitar riffing, the drumming, and there are a few subtle twists in tempo and rhythm. The guitar riffing is direct and aggressive and there is plenty of double-bass drumming and a few blast-beats. The vocals also offer a bit more versatility in "Sick Nation". While "Sick Nation" was mainly a mid-tempo track, "Jumping Jack" includes fast and mid-tempo parts. The verses are at crazy pace with punishing guitar riffs. The riffing once again is very direct and simple. Another feature of the album's sound is the lack of lead guitar solos in most tracks. At times, it is a missed opportunity, however, I believe it often fits to the tracks perfectly.

"Circle" has a frantic start with a blast-beat thunderstorm, leading into the mid-tempo verse part. The guitar riffing during the verse parts is Thrash Metal inspired, while the blast-beats bring the Death Metal vibes to the track. The choruses are driven by powerful and aggressive guitar riffs. "Stand Your Ground" goes right from the start into a fast verse part. The guitar riffing is tight and accompanied by the double-bass drumming. There are hardly any tempo changes between verses and choruses, the first notable twist comes with the break, when the track slows down to a measured tempo for a sequence of thunderous guitar riffs. The album finishes with "First Blood" and the beginning of the track is a spine-chilling melodic delivery at a measured tempo. It does not take long and the track transitions into a fast verse part with punishing guitar riffs, maintaining the initial melody of the track. The choruses slow down a bit to a measured tempo, and they are supported by the double-bass. "First Blood" is a change in sound as the track focusses on melodies, and it offers the only lead guitar solo of the album. The final track is one of the highlights and a great way to end the album.

WARFIELD WITHIN offer a promising third album. "Rise Of Independence" is a smart mixture of Death and Thrash Metal delivered with direct and punishing guitar riffs, double-bass attacks, and aggressive growling vocals. There is a lack of versatility and technicality at times, which is a bit unfortunate. The album is well produced. Fans of Thrash and Death Metal will dig the songs and will look forward to exciting live shows of WARFIELD WITHIN.
