WALK IN DARKNESS were formed in 2015 and they are from Italy. The band plays a blend of symphonic, Gothic, and modern Metal. "Gods Don't Take Calls" is their fifth full-length album and it has a length of approximately 50 minutes. As in previous releases, Emiliano Pasquinelli (TUCHULCHA) provides additional vocals. The album is an independent release. The first track of the album starts with a short intro delivered by the orchestral arrangements, transitioning into a two-parted verse part. The first part is a mid-tempo sequence with powerful guitar riffs. It goes into a second part at a slow tempo, driven by the strings and thunderous guitar riffs, accompanied by the piano. The vocals are versatile and vary across most of the vocal range. For the chorus parts, the vocals utilize predominantly higher pitched notes. The melodies during the choruses are catchy. "Nico Rising" sets the tone of the album sound. "Across The Oceans" continues with the sound of the previous track with verse and chorus parts played at a measured tempo. The guitar riffing is powerful during the choruses, while the verse parts are mainly driven by the vocals. The vocals mainly utilize deeper notes with little tonal shifts. The melodies of the choruses are again catchy but also have a dark side. At the end, there is a short lead guitar solo added to the track, which could have been and should have been a bit more central to the track.

"No Banners No Glory" offers a slight change in sound as the melodies are getting darker and add a bit of melancholy. The tempo remains slow with the acoustic guitars and the strings driving the verse part forward. The bridges and chorus parts add some Doom Metal elements with the guitar riffing, and with the growling vocals of Emiliano Pasquinelli an additional layer to the track. The choruses are very powerful, and they have some epic features. The melodies here are melancholic. "No Banners No Glory" is one of the album highlights. "Chasing The Horizon" has a crushing start with devastating guitar riffs and the deep-lying growls. It is a track at a measured tempo, and it develops into an alternation of the heavy, Death Metal inspired parts and slow and gentle parts driven by the female vocals, where many deeper notes are utilized. Both parts come together during the choruses, which are led by the female vocals with the growls in the background, accompanied by thunderous guitar riffs and a few double-bass drums. There is also a very short break, where the orchestral arrangements are at full swing. The melodies of the track are grim. "Freedom" is the first real album ballad. It is a very powerful song at a slow tempo with dark melodies. The verse parts are a mixture of acoustic and electric guitar driven, while the choruses use powerful guitar riffs, the orchestrations, melancholic and epic melodies, and operatic backing vocals. The track concludes with a short but contributing lead guitar solo.

The ballads continue with "Mother". Introduced by the lead guitars, the verse parts are driven by the vocals with the guitars being in the background. The vocals utilize a greater range with tonal shifts ranging from deeper to higher pitched notes. The melodies are dark and have some epic features during the chorus, where the guitar riffs are thunderous. There are a lot of lead guitar contributions throughout the track, and this gives "Mother" an extra dimension. "Towards Chang'An" leaves the ballad-esque territory for a moment. It is a track at a measured tempo with powerful guitar riffs at an almost sluggish rhythm. The vocals are versatile ranging from deeper to higher notes. There is backing vocal support throughout the track. The guitar riffing is tight at times. The choruses utilize mainly higher notes and catchy, almost sing-along melodies. At the end of the track, orchestral arrangements become more prominent, with the string finishing the song. "You Who Dread" continues with the measured tempo and the verse part has once again some ballad-esque features. The guitar riffing is powerful and tight. The female vocals drive the verse parts forward, while the growling vocals contribute to the background. When it comes to the choruses, the growls are getting more prominent and both vocalists equally contribute. This is the part where the track has its strongest moments. A lead guitar solo brings the track to a close once again.

The album closes with a new version of "Last Siren" from the 2017 album "In The Shadow Of Things". The revised version sounds heavier and more guitar oriented than the original. The more prominent orchestral arrangements give the track a modern note. It is worth watching both video versions of "Last Siren". The YouTube link of the new version is provided below. Altogether, "Last Siren" provides a fitting end to the album. WALK IN DARKNESS offer a blend of symphonic and melodic Metal with Gothic twists, which is typical of their music. The sound of "Gods Don't Take Calls" is not that different compared to previous albums, the band continues their musical journey with consistency. The guitar riffing is powerful and the short lead guitar solos provide something extra to the songs. The guest growling vocals give the tracks an extra layer. However, the songs during the second half of the album are a bit one-dimensional and predictable at times as they follow the same tempo and textures. The album is well produced. "Gods Don't Take Calls" delivers darkness and melancholy at times. Symphonic/melodic Metal fans, who like it dark and slow will enjoy the new album of WALK IN DARKNESS.
