Colosseum
W.E.B.
Some can say that the huge range of sonorities called Symphonic Metal is something exclusive for melodic genres of Metal. No, because there are extreme trends that uses the same elements, and in many times, in a better way. Names as FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE and DIMMU BORGIR are here to prove this allegation. And maybe as another example the name of the Greek quartet W.E.B. can be said, as "Colosseum" is here to show.
The band uses a blend between Symphonic Black Metal with influences of Symphonic Death Metal and Doom Metal. So it's nasty, aggressive and enriched by excellent melodies and orchestrations, what shows excellent contrasts. But the band uses spontaneous hooks on their songs as well, so the final result is something personal, full of energy and aggressiveness, but extremely elegant (like a theatrical act, as can be heard clearly on "Pentalpha"). So be prepared for the sinuous and unconventional work they offer. Darkface produced the album, having the hands of Psychon on the recording, mixing and mastering. And they found a wise combination that makes their musical work have an aggressive approach, with some crude touches, but in a clean and defined way that fits on their work perfectly.
"Colosseum" shines with its own value, and its wonderfully catchy. But for a first ride, the contrasts between somber moments and charming melodies exposed on "Dark Web" and "Murder of Crows" (both enriched with extreme moments, with very good vocals, and wonderful and rich orchestrations), the theatrical parts used on the complex expressions of "Pentalpha" (the contrasts between vocals and the guitars arrangements are amazing), the darkened feeling that fills "Colosseum" (until fast tempos blow things to pieces), and the excellent rhythmic contrasts shown on "Necrology" and "Exaudi Luciferi" are the best. After it, the fans will be ready to dive into the album with open arms. Yes, W.E.B. really did a great work on "Colosseum", and if the readers give them a chance and rear to it tenderly, they will find a treasure!
