Vomiturition - A Leftover (Reissue) album cover

VOMITURITION were an old school Finnish death metal band formed in 1990.  Their members went on to be in other bands, including Kai Hahto from ROTTEN SOUND, WINTERSUN, SWALLOW THE SUN and NIGHTWISH. Mika and Keijo also went on to join ROTTEN SOUNDVOMITURITION split up before they could garner much fame but managed to released a couple demos, two EP s and one full length before their days ended.  That full length, "A Leftover," was released in 1995 but Hammerheart records has seen fit to reissue it with a new sheen of sound to go along with it.

The band's style is without a doubt that classic death metal sound that only Finland (and Sweden) can pull off with such fervor.  I never heard the original mix so I have nothing to compare it to but on this reissue, the bass really pops.  The guitar tone is near perfect and the melody is subtle but goes a long way in improving the overall atmosphere of the record, which, of course, is sickening and heavy.

Kai has always proven himself to be very versatile and this album is no exception—he doesn't pound the drums relentlessly for the sake of it but instead takes a more methodical approach to extreme metal.  I've seen him live with NIGHTWISH twice and I can tell you the dude is a beast no matter what he does.mKeijo's vocals too are varied.  Sometimes he has a mid range growl that is deep but can be understood.  Other times, he gets so low he sounds like he vomiting blood (compliment, by the way) and still sometimes he has this rough sounding clean vocals that isn't quite a full on death growl.

The first track, "Sacred Tree The Pain" slowly fades into a much louder display with the bass and melodic guitars carrying the sound to its full range.  Dark melodic leads sprinkle over the guitars throughout the song and pair well with the dirty groove of the rest of the band. n"Depression," is a bit of a different song-barely three minutes long and with a much more hardcore/punk energy behind it but the death metal still finds a way to come out.  The catchy guitar and drums goes a long way in blending everything into a brutal package while still packing more thane enough punch.  The last forty seconds are pretty damn good, the band suddenly speeding up and finishing the song balls out.

The title track, "A Leftover," is a very speedy track; the beginning is super tight, fast riffing that is more like a race between the guitars and bass for who can cause the most whiplash.  The drums, especially the snare, are super focused and display much controlled chaos. The middle portion of the track actually has some thrash elements in the grooved out guitar, frantic drums, and the energetic vocals.

The oddly timed, machine gun fired riffs of "Trifle" make this track a standout but so does the varying degrees in which the tempo changes cleverly to pull the song in different directions without making it sound inconsistent."Extinction," is another personal favorite mostly because I loved the song's beginning where the slow but crushing tempo builds up, gaining more melody as it goes along.  At the song's halfway point, it suddenly speeds up to lighting fast speed with the entire band giving it their all.

While I don't find the album to be the classic that some may claim it to be, it is still an above average slab of OSDM.  Any fans of the genre should take the reissue as an opportunity to discover a lost album.
