US Black/Death Metal legion, VOMIT RITUAL release their first offering, a full length titled, "Callous" on Pulverised Records. Formed in 2008, they have since released two (2) demos, a compilation and a split album. But how would one summarize the essence that is secreted from "Callous"? First of all, let's talk about the production employed here, the album opts for a more 'exposed' type of recording, what is meant by that, is the instrumental aspect emits a tangible spirit, a vessel that feels old and lived in, like skin that has been cracked from inflicted scars and has been stripped away for the listener to don when the musical notes ring forth. The fusion of the vocals and instruments together produce a vehement atmosphere that feels both destructive and untamed in nature, the opener, "Asphyxiated" is a perfect example which fits the mold of the mentioned description, as the veins that courses through the track contains an energy that feels barbarous in nature.
The mixing of the guitars paints the illusion of potent chaos, listening to the guitars as a separate entity gives the image of a menacing thought burrowing into one's mind, like a maggot worming through yellowed sored flesh, the thoughts grow like a cancer and ravages one's sanity, so too does the guitar tone feel in the frenetic riffing utilized, the track "Penetrating the Infectious Wound" showcases this unbridled rage as the tone swells and matches the tempo of the thunderous drumming. If the guitars represent a diseased and decaying mind, infected with voices of the unknown, the drums represents the hands that haphazardly claw at the scalp, digging into the flesh with nails embedded with blood, skin and hair as they try to dig into the thoughts so it may seep out of the raw wound, so does the drums feel with its hammering tone which discharges a pulverizing force that is enough to create a fissure within the earth. "Lower Vibrational Entities" is a track which generates this sentiment as it showcases the multitude of abilities that is taken to create the obliterating assault brought forth on the album, the drumming displayed doesn't only illuminate where speed and power is concerned, but there are sections where grooves are added into the musical mixture to offer a new layer to the pandemonium.
The fuming mouth that dispels its scriptures upon the listener feels as though it shares the same blood with ABORTED and CRYPTOPSY (the Matt McGachy era), the vocal deliveries vary in tone but harness a primitive disposition towards it as the verses that are spewed feels as though they are barbed in thorns as it escapes a throat dried of mucus and moisture. The vocals on the album is the tendons which connects all the elements within to form a cohesive structure, this is displayed on "Nervous Temple" which is the longest track on the album clocking in close to eleven (11) minutes and morphs into different musical structures such as Doom and Black, but it is the vocals that slithers through the ever-changing monument and contorts to its shape, making it feel organic as each shift takes form.
Overall, the artistic talent taken to craft a cryptic yet unsettling atmosphere is done quite well, as one can view the shapes brought forth by the musical notes and construct their own world within each vibration that is echoed. Even though it took lengthy period of time to forge this album, I guess maybe in the end...it was worth it, however as much as I am eager to hear more from this band, I do hope the suspenseful time gap is kept to a minimum this time.
