Goddess of the North

The Bandcamp tags on this band, which was the only information I could find, are "post metal, depressive rock," and "melancholic." Their label however definitely has some unique offerings, and in this case, we are going to have to let the music be our guide. The album has eight songs, and "When the Goddess Rises" is first. The first word that come to mind when I listen to the song is harmony. The music is gentle, and the vocals are spoken, and it's so pretty, you hardly notice the introduction of heavy distortion, because the music is so melodic. "Blossom" is aptly titled, because that's the picture it places in my mind…a brightly colored flower rising from the frozen earth before it should. The clean vocals sound like they come from all around you, while you are dreaming. Smile.
"Manic Vows" is another gorgeous offering, and although some of the melodies are simple, they just work so well. They are like a lifeline that you can grab just before the ocean swallows you whole. The vocal screams are packed, even overflowing, with emotion. "Helix" fits the melancholy tag, because it sooths and calms you after the previous songs. It's a short lived panacea however. "03.09 (The Verdict)" has suspenseful tones, and it stays relatively quiet and steady through the first couple of minutes. An upset woman's cries break the silence, and the room grows dark. She expresses frustration and perhaps confusion over something she can't understand. "Judas" marks a turning point in the album. After all, he's (allegedly) the guy who betrayed Jesus, if you believe in that sort of things. It has much darker tones, and what began as an album crawling out of the shadows has returned to them.
"Forlorn" describes someone who is sad, lonely, and abandoned, or a place that is desolate and neglected. It soaks in slowly, as depression typically does. It seems to live somewhere that you just can't visit. Slightly out of reach, as they say. "Withered" is the final song, and not only does it continue the sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, it makes it hurt even more. Depression turns to anger with the advent of vocal screams, and it's like the last wish of a dying man screaming it into the air, as if it might be granted. Once he has no screams left to cry, no voice left to yell, and no will to do either any longer, he retreats, and fades back into the shadows. This album began with a lot of melody and frankly some gorgeous tones, but it took steps downward as it moved along, until the water was slowly over your head. For me, it was like the saying: the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
