Progressive Obsoletion
Violent Definition
Greece is a country that is harbouring more and more NWOTHM inspired bands. It usually isn’t so well known for their Thrash Metal bands, but of course, they are there. One of them is VIOLENT DEFINITION. They hail from the country’s capital Athens and have been making their brand of noise since 2008. It took them 10 years to get their debut album “Life Sentence” on the market, soon followed by “Live Sentence” (2020), which is, as you might have guessed, a live album. Now, some four years later, we are treated to another studio album, which they aptly titled “Progressive Obsoletion”.
And let’s take the bull by the horns; this is good stuff! These Greeks know how to play write, play, record and release Thrash Metal. What they do is not go for broke from start to finish. Nope, VIOLENT DEFINITION is opting to start at a slower pace and make sure we can hear that they are very capable as instrumentalists as well as in the vocal department. Because one thing is very apparent from start to finish; everything fits together like a Lego building. The guitars are clear and intense, the bass is thundering through like a tank and the drums make sure the tempos used are kept at just the right pace. I’m very much pleased as well as impressed. And the icing on the cake is that George "IronBeast" has exactly the right tone and intensity for a Thrash Metal album like “Progressive Obsoletion”.
What amazes me is that VIOLENT DEFINITION has opted for this build up. I have to advise you as a listener not to use all your energy at the start, because you will need more of it on the second half of “Progressive Obsoletion”. That’s when the tempo is increased, the intensity heightened and your neck muscles tested to the max. and all that is done without losing any of the quality that is quantifying the songs. VIOLENT DEFINITION has written just under 45 minutes of beautiful noise that only gets more impressive when we follow the path of the nine songs on offer. I have no other choice than to admit that with every listen I am aware of the fact that I am gradually but surely liking what I hear even better. Yes, every time “Progressive Obsoletion” is reaching my ears my admiration for VIOLENT DEFINITION goes up a small notch. I am increasingly becoming more of a fan of these Greeks. And that makes me very happy.
