Urn

Urn hails from Finland; I did listen to this band back in 200? Something, they did play a form of black thrash metal then, but have been active since 1994. And with the album Demon Steel, they stay on that path. But they have evolved more. Give me a Deströyer 666 hint time from time. Urn is a band that gets better with age. Compare the new album Demon Steel with the album Dawn of the Devastation (2006), is like to different worlds. They sound more brutal now. Sure, it's still black thrash metal, but it's way more angry. And the lead guitar has more space. I would say the music is more old school thrash, then black. And I like it. Black thrash metal is an art to play and also an anti-mainstream attitude. Tomi Uusitupa recording and mixing, has done great work here. Fun fact: Tomi Uusitupa is the singer in the power metal band Battledragon.

Demon Steel, is the strongest album so far, from Urn. A short intro "Retribution of the Dead", and then the track "Heir of Tyrants" tell you what this is about. "Are You Friends with Your Demons". That track is a masterpiece. They play it like speed black metal; the song is actually a bit melodic. Did not see that coming; the drums, bass, and guitars are so tight. "Burning Blood's Curse" holds the same high quality as "Are You Friends with Your Demons" , I can hear a hint of folk music, come and go . I will not go track by track . But "Wings of Inferno" is a slower track, and the lead guitar has a lot of space here, and it works really well. I can't help it, but it gives me an Anvil vibe. The track "Ruthless Paranoia" stands out; it happens a lot to be a black thrash metal track. " Predator of Spiritforms" the last track on the album, is an (evil) one. All tracks have that black thrash sound. You know that this album is not something for the dance floor, if I put it that way. And I love it. And having so high quality on the sound, so good musicianship, makes Urn stand out. If you are new to this genre, I recommend Urn and Demon Steel. It has that black trash metal music that belongs to this genre, but they also have something more. This stuff is good.
