Dauþalaikaz

Urfeind

This was an excellent album. Although some of the riffs weren’t necessarily ones you haven’t heard before, the band plays them with a passionate fire and energy, and you can connect some of the song titles with imagery. Well done lads. Well done.

From Bandcamp, I found the following short introduction about the band: “URFEIND is an anti-cosmic Black Metal project with a strong devotion to the thursian path.” Their new album here has nine songs. “Thorns of Madness” is first, and madness is the operative word. It comes out of the gate rumbling like a swarm of angry bees, with lightning speed drumming, raspy harsh vocals, and a veritable wall of guitars. It does settle just a bit to allow more edges of the song to come into play, but it’s a pedal to the metal type of song. “Serpent’s Flight” is another weighted and aggressive song, and the production matches the low end power that the band wants to accentuate.

“Weaving the Abyss” is just under eight minutes long, and it gives us the clearest shot of their music so far. A slow and steady pace develops, with thick bass notes, and the harsh vocals paint a very bleak picture. “Hymn of Corruption” probably speaks about the hypocrisy of modern religion, and it’s another slow, but powerful grind with many harrowing elements. “Nine to Zero” begins with some subtle melodies sandwiched in between the layers of hatred, and malcontent, mostly in the guitar work. Black Metal can be very melodic at times, despite some of the preconceived notions, and the once firm genre boundaries have long been stretched. “Void” is a faster moving song with a lot of guitars, and the vocals sound like hatred personified.

“Anthem of Decay” has horrid, hopeless tones, and a feeling that the end is naught. I picture an old man dying along in his rabbled cabin, with no heat, no food, and festering wounds. It is not a pretty sight, and he prays for death. “Inner Rampage” closes the album, and it’s a burner, riddled with frightening tones and harrowing guitars, You get the feeling that something massive lurks around the corner, and it is coming for you. Overall, this was an excellent album. Although some of the riffs weren’t necessarily ones you haven’t heard before, the band plays them with a passionate fire and energy, and you can connect some of the song titles with imagery. Well done lads. Well done.
