A Thousand And One Nightmares

Unrecht

One thing becomes clear from the beginning, and stay that way all through the album; the riffing by UNRECHT is sometimes very canny, very intricate, thoroughly convincing and mostly well done. The growling/grunting vocals on the album are really fit for purpose, and very complementary of the musical intentions of the band.

UNRECHT is German for injustice, but if you then assume that such is their home turf, you will be mistaken. They are a relatively new band from Madrid in Spain, and since their start in 2023 they have decided to make music that combines contemporary Heavy Metal, Industrial Metal and Rap Metal into their own kind of mix. I can only show my appreciation for a set of musicians that is not afraid of treading outside the well-trodden path and is inspired to try something new and exciting. It is therefore quite a pleasure to be the one that is allowed to review their debut album "A Thousand And One Nightmares", which will be released through Art Gates Records on 12-12-2025.

Let me start by writing about the musical direction that the band has chosen. I wish I could say the same for the rapping vocals that are being used on "A Thousand And One Nightmares". They sometimes work, but more than often they don't. it just falls short in professionalism, intensity and atmosphere in comparison with the rest, musically as well as vocally. What I will say is that the lyrical content of what the rapper is saying is on point in rhythm, but it is lacking the punch that the rest of the music and vocals carry.

And it is a real pity that this is what I feel and hear when I listen to "A Thousand And One Nightmares", because it does pull the appreciation for what UNRECHT is trying to accomplish down by at least a notch or two. It is my conviction that with some proper and persuasive raps I would have told you that "A Thousand And One Nightmares" is an album worth pursuing at any cost. Now I can't, or at least won't, because if you ask me this is something that everyone who doesn't mind some rap has to decide for themselves. Those who love their rap will probably dig it, whilst those who (like me) are on the fence when it comes to the expression of rhythmic poetry (rap) will feel that this just doesn't hack it (again, like me).
