UNHOLDUN is a one-man Black Metal band from France. In the true boundaries of the genre, the EPK came with only the songs, and The Metal Archives had only the name of the one member, and nothing else about the band. This is their first EP, and contains four songs. "Framée" is the first cut. As I expected, it a traditional sound a-la the FWOBM, with a wall of guitars, screaming vocals, and quadruple time drumming. It finally slows down around the half-way mark but picks back up quickly.

"Francisque" is more of the same. There is again another slow down at the half-way mark, but to distinguish this song from the previous one would prove very difficult. "Angon" at least has a different beginning. Clean guitars and melancholy tones abound, and drums roll in slowly. The main riff hits, and it's the first semi-clean riff we have on the album, with a neat little cadence. The chaotic sound returns, but not without some decent songwriting, and some lead notes. "Flamberge" closes the album, more akin to the first two tracks, although the haunting clean vocals bring something new to the table. Another slow down occurs before mid-way, but it is short lived.

At best, this was a mediocre effort that had some nice moments, but too many of the songs were indistinguishable from one another. I will continue to wonder why these Black Metal bands exist today. Staying true to the forefathers of the genre seems to be the one way that UNHOLDUN desires to approach their music, but for me, it's just another unmoving effort that you can safely skip.
