Break Your Faith

While studying up on TURN COLD to write this review, I kept seeing references to this release/the band, as being "cross-over" thrash/punk. I don't know if this is something someone else said about them, or what they've said about themselves, but I find it a tad ill-fitting. This EP reminds me so much of Contradictions Collapse by MESHUGGAH. A release I would not at all consider to be punk, and only thrash in an elemental sense. As in fast, chunky, chugging rhythms, with double-bass machine-gunning between breaks/breakdowns. Honestly if I were to call it anything, I'd say it's more like "proto-djent/progressive/thrash".
The title track, "Break Your Faith" seems like an amalgamation of 2 albums to me. The previously mentioned Contradictions Collapse, and Beneath The Remains by SEPULTURA. Actually the entire EP seems to be exactly that. Like if you were to take a few rhythm bits from "We'll Never See The Day" (MESHUGGAH), and a bit or two from the guitar parts for the bridge, the general direction of the leads, and lead breaks, and you have "Delusion Solution".
"The End Of My Rope", was interesting to me because while keeping the same tones of the other two songs, the rhythm bits, and the song's stylings meshed more closely with TESTAMENT circa The New Order. Again, another album that had all the right elements, but was just a hair short of making that big leap. Kind of like Ride The Lightning, by METALLICA. Awesome album, well-made, but completely supplanted, and over-shadowed by Master Of Puppets.
Now, do not mistake my meaning, or intent here. I am not suggesting TURN COLD copied anything done by MESHUGGAH, or SEPULTURA. What I would like to point out though is that it's like these guys are on the same vein as the other 2 bands I'm mentioning. Meaning that there is like this "place" a band falls into, where, they have enough money to record in a studio...just not a very good one, and the acoustics in these studios is identical in quality. You can hire a decent producer, just he's deaf in one ear, and has to use his non-dominant ear instead. You're getting "better" at writing, and experimenting a bit more, but your hooks are still just a tad grating, and non-pleasing around the edges, or there are too few/too many/in odd places. While this EP falls just a tad short of where I think it could have been, it does make me a little excited for what they may release next!
