What the hell am I listening to right now? Yes, I know it is a band called TURIAN, a Seattle band that makes Metal Hardcore mixed with Noise Rock. I also know that “Blood Quantum Blues” is their fourth release, and according to their Bandcamp site the first one where they really feel free. Well, if vocalist Vern Metztli-Moon sounds like maniacal when she feels free, I hate to contemplate what she sounded like when she was trapped. Their debut album “The Near Room” is from 2018, so the band has been going for at least seven years. I unfortunately couldn’t find any other information about them that would be working as a timeline.

But hey, we are here for the music, so let’s go there. TURIAN uses Progressive Metal parts as well as Grindcore bits and pieces to add to their Metal Hardcore and Noise Rock, giving them a very distinguishable but impossible to categorise musical title. And as far as the music goes, the intensity is almost choking me to death. And I have to say that although “Blood Quantum Blues” is only 37:46 minutes long, after a full listen I am suffering from extreme exhaustion. TURIAN gets a hold on you from start to finish; doesn’t let you go and doesn’t let up, slow down or tone it down at any time during these proceedings. And as I am trying to decipher all the sounds and noises that my speakers are throwing at me, I am becoming in danger of simply frying my brains. What I am trying to tell all of you that you need to be sure that you are ready to listen to TURIAN. If you are not, you could be hospitalised after listening to “Blood Quantum Blues”.

What is even more frustrating is trying to decide whether what I am listening to is good yes or no. I honestly do not have a clue. There are parts that I like, there are bits that are just too demanding, but there are also parts that are just right, where TURIAN hits the spots. The difficulty is that even after several listens I just can’t tell you what “Blood Quantum Blues” does for me, or is that just it? It frustrates me, as I find it intriguing and interesting. Plus, I am in awe with the musicality of the musicians, of the ingenuity of the songs and the depth (or is height) of the severe intensity that TURIAN is sending my way? If you want to be just as confused as I, give TURIAN’s latest album “Blood Quantum Blues” a listen. Who knows, it might be just what you need.
