Broke & Ugly
Turbo
They're fast, they're crass, and they're here to kick your ass; it's Turbo from Halifax, Nova Scotia, with their brand-new album "Broke & Ugly." Dubbed Canada's answer to Motörhead, Turbo keeps the headbanging, thrashy energy up that they showed off to the world on their 2020 debut "Fast as Fvck" with "Broke & Ugly." "Broke & Ugly" takes the Turbo energy, cranks it to 11, and takes no prisoners. Right from the beginning of the album, with the track "Ruthless Forever," listeners are kicked and thrashed around with crushing, speedy riffs and the opening vocal line, "It feels so good to be [redacted] back;" The thrashing is so intense at times it feels like I owed Turbo money and never paid my debts. The onslaught doesn't stop as the album progresses and shows us that we have "No Savior" from the vicious assault.
"Scorpio Garbage Fire" is the theme song for those unlucky enough to have exes under that sign. The beginning of the chorus, "Well, if you wanted to make a scene, take a ride with me! You're a garbage fire," sums up my last relationship a little too well. "Scorpio Garbage Fire" had me involuntarily headbanging the memories away and left me ready for a mosh pit. The title track, "Broke & Ugly," is that kick in the pants saying, "Hey dude, remember what college was like for you? You were flat broke and ugly as sin." "Broke & Ugly" can also describe many of the moshpit-dwelling cavemen I find myself getting thrown around within a wall of death.
As a whole, "Broke & Ugly" is peak speed and thrash metal with a party-hard overtone. But I think the comparison to Motörhead is a little heavy-handed. While both Motörhead and Turbo share a decent amount of similarities, they're both very different from each other, which isn't a bad thing. Motörhead considered themselves rock & roll with punk rock and speed metal elements. Conversely, Turbo is a thrash band with New Wave of Traditional Metal undertones, putting Turbo closer to bands like Flotsam & Jetsam and Carnivore. After listening to the gem of East Coast Canadian metal, I'm fired up to see what Turbo does next
