A supergroup with players from DREAM THEATER, SPOCK'S BEARD, THE FLOWER KINGS and MARILLION sound like a Prog dream? Well, this reverie came true in 1999 when Mike Portnoy, Neil Morse, Roine Stolt and Pete Trewavas came together for the first time. 15 years with the TRANSATLANTIC moniker and three albums later they are back with a new masterpiece called "Kaleidoscope". This 75:43 Minute long album (and only 5 songs) is a musical journey that only musicians at the level of these guys' are able to make.

The first track "Into The Blue" starts with a melodic scene al'a YES with Cello, Synths and Portnoy percussive orchestration and from there on it turns into a complete musical madness (In a good Way). Portnoy's drumming on this one, and the whole lot is amazing while also Trewavas's bass work is not less than rightfully fit, like a glove. Stolt and Morse exchange solos and odd time signature parts as easy as me changing a pair of socks (At least they make it sound that way). In overall, this is what has been making this band so colorful and great. 15 minutes into the song (this is a 25+ minutes long) a low range vocal enters and from that point you will hear how every single member of the band contributes with his unique vocals' sound to form a perfect harmony.

"Shine", the album's single, is a beautiful ballad with an awesome guitar solo and an amazing vocal performance by every single member. "Black As The Sky" is a triplet driven song again, highly influenced by YES with perfectly arranged vocals parts and great main vocals from Stolt and Morse. "Beyond The Sun" has a PINK FLOYD feel in it producing a great pedal steel parts played by Rich Mouser. It's a nice song with an enjoyable quiet break from the lunacy that came before, heading on for almost 32 minute long, the main song "Kaleidoscope" that is just one of those perfect innuendos, probably the best Prog song ever heard.

This is an astounding Prog album by such an inspiring group. The sound and production are killer especially the vocals. It is a must for Prog fans out there and music fans alike. These kinds of bands, and kind of albums, are made once in a decade (mostly by this band).
