Realm of Ashes
Timor Et Tremor
From their EPK, "After six years without a release, TIMOR ET TREMOR returns with "Realm of Ashes." As the band's most personal album the lyrics emanate from a deep inner sense of each band member while every song describes the whole process of creation over the years. These songs shaped by a consistent evolution carry the typical characteristics that define the sound of the band like melodic guitars, varied songwriting and the unmistakable mix of clean and harsh vocals that combine to the essential cornerstones." The album has eight songs.
"Mirrors And Smoke" is the first. It's a short mood-setter. The mood is somber and a bit dangerous from the harsh vocals. Seguing into "Voices from the Coffin," which has a fuller and richer sound. There is a slow down after the half-way mark, with some meaty bass notes, but the sound is fairly standard in terms of the style. I hope that the band has some tricks up their sleeve. "A Hundred Days of Rain" begins with a slow and somewhat depressive groove. The backing sound is fairly thick but when the vocals are delivered one way, it halts the progress of the album in some sense. The slow down to clean tones is a nice variation, but it doesn't last long. Here come the clean vocals...there is the diversity I was waiting for.
"King of the Lost" begins with another slow grind of clean and distorted guitars, with a few harmonies here and there. The vocalist does have a nice snarl, but the music is just too formulated for me, following the blueprint laid by the aging forefathers of the genre. "Of Wolf and Sun" is another slow start, in an effort to put through some very despondent and sober melodies. It hits that mark fairly well. So do the very somber melodies. This album is growing on me. "Catharsis" begins with crunchy footsteps in the snow, leading to another slow and sober sound. The clean guitars and vocals are a nice change of pace, and they really drive home the despondent tones. "A Crown of Bones" is a faster moving song with more energy in the guitars. The slow-down is again a nice change of pace, but these elements on the album are starting to become too predictable.
"Bearer of the Accursed Sands" closes the album. The grind is weighing on me. It's quite effective at pushing tones of depression and anger in equal doses, but the sound drags out just a bit too long for me. Overall, the album has potential. Like many Metal genres these days however, the Melodic Death Metal genre is so oversaturated with new bands. If I could give any advice to bands still playing in this style, it would be to diversify your sound and put your own stamp of personality into your music.
