Throat Locust - Dragged Through Glass album cover

THROAT LOCUST are a newly formed Death Metal band from Corpus Christi, Texas. Their debut demo "Dragged Through Glass" was recorded at Harbour City Sound Lab. It has a length of approximately 13 minutes and it is an independent release. So, that are the very first recorded songs of this new and exciting Death Metal band. "Axe Grinder" is the first of three songs on the EP, and it should give some hints on the sound that can be expected from THROAT LOCUST. My very first impression is that they are more on the brutal side of Death Metal, not necessarily on the technical side of it. "Axe Ginder" starts with powerful and sharp guitar riffing. It is fast track, but not overly paced, with a lot of changes between mid-tempo and high speed intervals. The growling vocals are at the deep end of the guttural range with little variation, and that fits perfectly to the grim sound. The drumming is well adjusted to the track, there are a few double-bass kicks when needed. Overall, it is a very good opening song, and "Axe Ginder" was released as official video with the YouTube link given below.

"Corruption And Greed" starts with a short mid-tempo part before entering the verse part at blistering pace. The song is more brutal compared to the opening track, and the guitar riffing is more variable as there are a lot of changes in rhythm throughout the track. The lead guitar solo is not overly technical, but it contributes very well to the song. There are backing vocals added to "Corruption And Greed", which are higher pitched screams and act as a counterpoint to the deep lying growls of Gil Perez. "Death Lurker" starts at a sluggish rhythm with powerful guitar riffing and seamlessly transitions into a mid-tempo track. There are tempo shifts between mid-tempo and down-tempo parts throughout the track. "Death Lurker" is perhaps the song with the darkest sound on the demo. There are fine lead guitar parts supporting the riffing and adding very nicely to the grim sound. Highlight of "Death Lurker" is the cool lead guitar solo.

Three songs are too little to give an assessment on the music of THROAT LOCUST. It would be unfair to put the songs on "Dragged Through Glass" in a wider context of US Death Metal. The demo indicates that THROAT LOCUST is on the way to become a brutal Death Metal band. Some of the songs, especially "Death Lurker" show the potential of the band. With Gil Perez, they have a vocalist who leads very well through the songs. The songwriting still needs a bit of maturity as well as the production. Although THROAT LOCUST is not offering some groundbreaking new stuff, they will leave their mark with a first full-length album and Death Metal fans should be ready for that.
