The Last of Lucy

With THE LAST OF LUCY being a concoction of the technical complexities of math metal undertones and paired with the sporadic overtones of aggressive grindcore molded together beautifully to form this pod of dynamic technical death metal. With overtures of progressive chord progressions and smooth jazz insurgence that push the boundaries of their genre, “Godform” is an album you need to listen to.

THE LAST OF LUCY had formed at some point back in 2007 within the sprawling urban wasteland of Los Angeles. Since their inception into the world of metal, these guys have been on an impressive path of evolution. From the obscure complexity of math metal and aggressive grindcore that influenced their sound early on within their career to the more dynamic progressively technical death metal of today, these guys have truly redefined and honed their musicianship.

From the creation of a band with a unique name to having independently released two EP’s, one single and a full length album, it’s no wonder this band was able to forge a solid underground following. After being signed to Transcending Obscurity Records from Mumbai,Maharashtra, India, THE LAST OF LUCY was able to release their previous full length album “Moksha”, back in February of 2022 which was well received by their fans. This momentum paved the way for their third full length album “Godform”, which was released May 17th, 2024 under Transcending Obscurity Records. After hearing of the hype around this album, I am excited to dive in as this album is 32.29 minutes of technical/ progressive death.

At first glance, you get the bright color scheme that is accustomed with various death metal album art. Brightly colored pastels of orange and turquoise with hues of red depicting some form of alien insectoid symbiotic creature within a hive. This has definitely piqued my interest. The album opens up with a torrent of aggressive complexity and intensity with “Wormhole”. With a barrage of blast beats, tasty riffs and grindcore influenced chaotic vocals that are all well placed and timed beautifully, this song hits hard. Solid chord progression building up throughout the song that leads into some nice breakdowns before fading out with a delightful tone.

Moving into the song “Twin Flame”, after a short intro, you are immediately slammed with complex riffs, intricate time signatures and sporadic but dynamic vocals fused over solid blast beats and heavy bass kick spurts. Definitely hear their roots shine through with elements of grindcore and the complexity of their original math metal undertone that builds their technical prowess. This then fades into a well timed cascade of smooth jazz with clean vocals harmonizing over the melody before the onslaught picks up again.

“Shadim Seance” Starts with a sweet but brief intro of a beautiful melody and what sounded like birds chirping that quickly fades into another intense barrage of heavy complex riffs, vociferating vocals that seem to set the pace of the song. With the name of the song being very intriguing,as it refers to the attempt to commune with an entity known as the ‘Sedim’. A being from Judaism, which was considered a god of a foreigner and was not considered necessarily evil. What further intrigues me is the build up that leads into the next song. A song that follows in suit with the previous song, “Sanguinary Solace”, which basically means comfortable with bloodshed or at peace with being bloodthirsty. A soft intro with a few chimes before hitting you with another violent wave of intense riffs, blast beats and visceral growls that pulverize your senses

The album “Godform” goes hard, start to finish this album keeps you pulled in and on the edge. Each song adds its own flavor of complex dynamics and chord progression that builds the overall feel for the album. No one song is exactly identical with lasting impressions that leaves the overall album quite memorable. The production was flawless as well with prestigious mixing and mastering start to finish by none other than “Dave Otero”.

These guys execute their sound with such precision that it will have a lasting impression that will leave you craving more. I cannot personally think of anything that needs improvement. I can only hope that this band can replicate what they do live on stage. This album is absolutely amazing in every way.
