The Conjuration - Surreal album cover

Sometimes technology can be a fantastic thing. Because it allows for people like Corey Jason to take us by the hand and lead us through their schizophrenic soundscapes. New album for one man band (or army, either fits) THE CONJURATION. "Surreal" has really managed to take things one step ahead of its predecessor "The Human Condition".

We're talking about Progressive Death Metal bordering Avant Garde bordering schizophrenia. Just like KING CRIMSON did with Rock and Blues back in the 70s. Surely not for the faint of heart, nor for the close-minded. So grab your dramamines and keep an open mind people.

Right from the start you're thrust into a hellish realm of "Profane". Ultra-fast ripping riffage, death growls and screams, melodic guitar licks, and paranoia-ladden rhythm shifts kinda reminiscent of VOIVOD, for lack of a better analogy. "Capricorn" widens the spectrum even more, introducing jazzy influence and craven mad synths to the mix. Told you its Avant Garde. Don't expect constraints of any sort.

As you progress further this degenarating spiral things get even wilder. From the crazy clown-like tauntings and EBM influences of "Kaleidoscopic Thought", the ambient lunacy of  "Perception Shattered: A Darker Scope", down to the 10 minute opus "Overdose", one thing is certain here. Expect the unexpected. Corey Jason is a brilliant musician, both in performing and songwriting, that just won't let you ignore him. If you're into some background music, tough luck. You made a huge mistake. "Surreal" is not for you.

What is most amazing about THE CONJURATION is that it doesn't really sound like a one-man band. Often such projects suffer from repetitiveness, at least as songwriting goes. The human brain can process that much anyway. But not here. Is he a fucking genius or just hopelessly insane? Doesn't matter anyway, after all insanity and genius are just a hair's breadth apart. What really matters is that "Surreal" is one hell of an album!
