Datura Metel Vol I
Thaeia
There are many experimental acts today, blending influences from several different Metal genres to create something of their own. It's a very good strategy, and the mix can create something really new. And although the final result of what is heard on "Datura Metel Vol I", the latest release from the Italian quintet THAEIA, isn't something new, it's very good and points towards something astonishing in the future.
Their music could be labeled as a mix between the current technical paradigm of Progressive Metal technical with abrasive and greasy modern influences (as can be heard on the guitar tunes used on the EP). They could be said as in the same team of names as PERIPHERY, ARCHITECTS and PROTEST THE HERO, but don't let the hurry and your senses delude you: their music is personal, and can grow even more in the future. For now, this mix between the deep technical approach they use with modern vibes is really full of a young and savage energy.
The EP was recorded and produced by Marco Mantovani at Forward studio, with the mastering being done at Sterling studios by the hands of Ted Jensen. The result is something defined (what means that the listeners will understand what's being expressed by the band), but with a rough and modern approach. It's very good, and fits on what the band expresses.
The contrasts between a technical and ferocious form with melodic and modern influences heard on "Osservati" and "Feather" (some Gothic Rock/Post Rock-like parts can be heard on the vocals of this last one), the brutal and oppressive discharge unleashed by "Naked Wounds" (charming introspective melodies can be heard on this one contrasting with brutal moments, along with nasty guitar riffs) and "Living Nothing" (the nasty modern groove mixed with clean modern parts is amazing), and the massive catching energy shown on "Into the Woods" (what good work heard on bass guitar and drums) is proof that a giant can be arising on Italy.
Yes, THAEIA is on the right path, but if "Datura Metel Vol I" is good as it is, I just can't wait for Vol II!
