Voyage
Tanith
TANITH is a relatively new outfit from NYC specializing in creating Metal tunes embodied with the classics. "Voyage" is the band's sophomore release and heralds a marked statement of intent. Simply put, the band have refined their brand of Heavy Metal and are poised to spread the gospel worldwide via Metal Blade Records.
The first point that arose when listening to this album was that I was reminded of when I first heard GHOST. Granted, TANITH is a much different band; however, their pool of influences borders the Swedish mega-act. My first reaction to GHOST was one of disappointment - the band clearly was a hybrid of classic BLUE OYSTER CULT and MERCYFUL FATE. This was a deadly combination yet immediately recognizable. A similar reaction was elicited from "Voyage," an album in which TANITH wears its influences on its sleeves and proudly so.
The first track, "Snow Tiger," signals a weak, if not limp beginning. There are myriad other songs that would have been ideal to open the album with. Obviously, this was just poor planning.
"Falling Wizard" follows closely and is a significant improvement. Propelled by excellent guitar hooks, the second track helps the album to gain some needed momentum. The third track, "Olympus by Dawn," has a heavy BLUE OYSTER CULT vibe and the band excels in cashing in on the catchy nature of having both a male and female vocalist, a distinct advantage. A distinct URIAH HEEP and RUSH influence can also be heard throughout.
The production can be described as alive and crisp. One has to wonder, though, if the album is actually too polished. There is a seemingly abiding weakness that prevails throughout screaming for an edge. TANITH is thus lacking the necessary "danger element" of Metal titans.
"Architects of Time" is the fourth track and comes across as a plodding determined effort. There seems to be a modicum of confusion prevailing throughout the song. The ultimate determination, though, is that the song would be much more Metal if it were slowed just a bit. Often, a simple 4/4-time signature at 120 bpm is the most cathartic means to deliver a song. The best example of this is "For Whom the Bell Tolls".
At the end of the day, please don't misinterpret my summary. TANITH is an excellent band though there are some rough edges that need to be smoothed over to ensure their success. Perhaps capitalizing on said rough edges may be the correct prescription for the band's ails. Only time will tell. In the meantime, SANHEDRIN, label mates of TANITH, is an alternative outfit that showcases all that is great about classic Heavy Metal while looking to the future; thus, one would be better served seeking them out instead.
