Tango Pirates - Danger! - Children At Play album cover

We all have that one leather jacket; that hide piece that is almost like a second skin. It is that studded black mantle which bears the wounds of past adventures and cracking creases of curious tales; a uniform adorned with cigarette burns, washed with liquor and starched with some forbidden substance. It had once listened to the muffled blues shuffle coming from inside the bar as the bouncer was telling you to 'beat it' - only to smile when he saw you sneak in through the back. It has also been the sport-coat that once kept a dear companion warm during a walk back from the club. And if you look inside its pockets, you may discover memories that may have otherwise been washed away by one too many drinks. It remembers and so do you. And when you listen to the TANGO PIRATES' latest EP "Danger! - Children At Play", you feel like you're wearing that leather friend once again.

If you haven't heard of the TANGO PIRATES prior to this foray, then get ready to taste Rock 'N' Roll in its most undiluted form. Headed by Danny Fury (ROGUE MALE, LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH, KILL CITY DRAGONS, VAIN, SHAM 69, DOGS D'AMOUR) these seasoned troubadours combine the Sleaze-Punk attitude of HANOI ROCKS with the bluesy alacrity of the NEW YORK DOLLS.

"Danger! - Children At Play" opens with "Western Voodoo Mission", a swinging, punk-rock boogie with a big, 1970's full-band hook which will send you singing down Tin Pan Alley in search of a vintage Les Paul. "Borrowed Time" and "Ghostship Bar Blues" then get us a couple of shots at a seedy joint somewhere outside of town and serenades some of the lost souls with slow, mean, blues rockers that are full of dirty licks, dirty kicks and sexy tricks. "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll" is yet another heavy blues shuffle that is sure to get the tables turned over with massive drum hits and have the sailors making the most of their time on leave; better hide the rum. And to polish off the night with something exquisite TANGO PIRATES offer us "Dark Star", another piece of genuine Punk/Rock 'N' Roll aesthetic that is as nostalgic and poignant as it is rowdy and inspiring; reminding us that we've all met our share of 'dark stars'.

The production on "Danger! - Children At Play" is stripped down and rather basic and through this it provides the EP with a very clear and genuine feel - like that of a live recording; of a band gathered in one place instead of being scattered throughout the studio. The simplistic production also allows for all of the instruments to assert their presence - even though with the mix at hand, the drums and bass guitar simply dominate the songs with their thick, pounding grooves. Nevertheless, when guitarist Jack Flint gets his foot in the door, he takes over with screeching, kinky guitar leads and gritty riffs, and vocalist Danny Fury remains an everlasting body of magnetism and poise throughout the entire recording. Fury's honest lyricism and effortless delivery remain at the centre of the carefully crafted songs, combining the charm of Michael Monroe and the intrigue of Alice Cooper.

Overall, it's hard to find fault with such an endearing record. Its raw combination of Glam Rock, Punk and Blues is just too hard to resist. Yes, it may be a trinket from the old days, but it is one that we must cherish. Much like those smoky leathers, TANGO PIRATES' "Danger! - Children At Play" is something that will always have a place in any scene throughout time.
