T.O.M.E. - I - III album cover

With no Facebook page, no Bandcamp page, and nothing included in their EPK, my only way of finding any information about this Black Metal band from Finland was the Metal Archives. T.O.M.E. stands for "Tome of Misanthropical Experience." "I-III" is the band's debut full length, and contains three long songs.

"I" is the opening track. It's a 14-minute opus. Some opening clean guitars lead to heavy, lumbering distorted guitars. Three minutes in, and the sound drops off to just some more clean guitars, with a depressive atmosphere in the background. Vocal shrieks come in close to the seven-minute mark, as the distorted guitars make a return. This is some quite odd and unique Black Metal. The tortured wails at the end are agonizing.

"II" is eleven minutes in length, beginning with a wall of guitars, and another slow pace. Intense screams come out a little at a time. It's a lot like the previous track, with a similar sound. The guitars dart in and out of a structured riff with some accents. I picture cold, barren landscapes of snow as far as the eye can see. Six minutes in, and it drops again, to some eerie tones and background ambiance. Whispers in the dark...are they there, or are they a figment of your imagination? Then comes a long fade-out.

"III" is a ten-minute closer. It takes a while to get going, but again, it's another slow, grinding song. It picks up a bit, in both pacing and evil sounds. The screams are tortured wails of a dying man, trapped in a small room, starving to death slowly. The final two minutes are a few screams followed by echoing clean guitars.

Three songs are really not enough to rate an album on...but I think I have a clear idea of what the band is trying to present here. As I mentioned above, I see frigid wastelands and end of times kinds of things. It's about as depressing of an album as you will hear this year. However, that being said, the three tracks were very similar sounding. The production is quite muted as well. For these reasons, I just could not give it a favorable rating.
