Chosen One (Reissue)
Symon Sez

To resist a commercial trend is always a very hard trial. In the middle of the 80's, the NWOBHM acts and all traditional Heavy Metal acts had to face the Thrash Metal invasion (unleashed by the commercial success of METALLICA's "Master of Puppets") and Glam Metal. Thrash Metal and Glam Metal experienced a life danger when Alternative Rock/Metal tendencies appeared in the early days of the 90's (when NIRVANA took the charts by assault). So imagine how a North American Heavy/Power Metal act could survive on an environment as that one presented on 1991. Isn't it a hardship to deal with? But the North American quartet SYMON SEZ did it with a Demo Tape, "Chosen One", and it only came to the light of the day on 2022!
The band's music is based on U.S. Metal/Power Metal traits, or in other words, a musical work similar to bands as FIFTH ANGEL, OMEN, RUTHLESS, MALICE, old QUEENSRŸCHE and others of this same generation that worked with charming and hooking melodies, a very good technical insight and the alchemy between influences of Hard Rock of the 70's and Heavy Metal. It's a usual form of working of those days, based on a very good level of musical talent of the band's members. It's a very good work, indeed, even after all these years.
These songs are from a Demo Tape recorded during the summer of 1991 (namely, the months between June and September) at Oklahoma (the city from where the band came from), so don't expect something modern and defined. It's excellent in the view of those days, and the work of Kostas Scandalis on the remastering gave a breath of life on the songs. It's a very good sonority in the view of the early 90's (of course I'm taking this aspect, because it's impossible to establish parameters between the past and the present). Musically, the fans of Old School U.S. Metal must have a copy of "Chosen One", because such form of music was done for them.
"Torture" is that kind of song that shows clearly the inner guts of U. S. Metal (refined technique, a touch of accessibility, a care for hooking melodies, with a good work of the vocals); on "Chosen One", after a slow beginning, one can check some Hard Rock and Thrash Metal like touches on the guitar riffs (with a very good melodic scent on the solos); the Hard Rock influences into their music became extremely evident on "Lost Soul", where the work of bass guitar and drums resembles something of KISS during the 80's, and what lovely melodic lines, and the same can be said of "It's You". And "When It Rains" is an excellent power ballad, a typical feature of those years for such musical genre (and what great arrangements on the guitars). And "It's You", the final song, is the same one described above, just only without the intro.
It's a pity that SYMON SEZ never released an album. But who knows if this release of "Chosen One" can make a miracle happen...
