Heavy Rock Power trio SUN BELOW (2013) rolls up the righteous doobie doom from Toronto, Canada. This 3 song slab is fresh - it was tracked in September 2019 and released the following month. Drummer Will Adams did triple duty on "BLACK VOLUME III". Besides synchronizing the head-nod via his schwingin' time-keeping behind the skins, he also mixed this release and did the cracking artwork, which looks a whole lot like the artwork from their previous compact releases, "Black Volume" and "Black Volume II".  SUN BELOW maintains it short and sativa-sweet with these 3 releases dispensing less than a handful of songs each - and I am totally cool with that option for releasing music. I like the temporal character of this approach; make the music quality and make it art. Thou Shall Not Release Stale Tuneage - while not a Stoner Commandment that I am currently aware of, it bloody well should be.

Dinosaur bass buzz instigates "Green Visions" and at only 5 minutes and 22 seconds, seems like but a pop fly burner down first base that gets us on the bag and ready for the mighty 12 minutes of "Solar  Burnout" where the lads swing for the "Holy Mountain" fence and catch a ground double, staying in fair fuzz territory. The lads cut "Wires" by RED FANG as the last song on "BLACK VOLUME III" while one and a half short years ago the band also cut a cover of "Dragonaut" by SLEEP on their first release. I have never heard the RED FANG version of "Wires" but the band sounds like they approached another gear on this cover adding some of the hyperkinetic drum and guitar metal riffing that we can expect. We know where this is going - SUN BELOW sound a wee bit like SLEEP, BONGRIPPER and the mighty BLACK SABBATH.

The 23+ minutes of "BLACK VOLUME III" are easy to digest and allowed me the traversée to lead off towards their earlier releases. On "BLACK VOLUME III" Jason plays it close to the Matt Pike-SLEEP side of the spoon but he covers some more ground vocally if you look at all 3 "Black Volume" releases, flourishing layers of EFX-effected voices and vocal lines that plug added dimension to the musical sludge tarpit trap. I dig the license in their music - the band is SOLID, solid facility like a 3 man outfit of decent players usually shows while not particularly yielding to the geeze and wheeze of their musical luminaries' arrangements; which is to say they bring a bit more tautness and edge, but only a bit. Have a listen. I am sure these guys will be making the music festival rounds soon.
