SULPHUR SUN formed in Switzerland in 2011. They released an EP in 2013, and now are back in 2020 with a new EP, titled "Placodermic Heraldry," which contains two tracks. "The Temple of Dunkleosteus" leads off the album. It's four-and-a-half minutes in length. The instruments and vocals come out of the gate and right for your throat. The drummer is exceptional, rolling the kick drum with perfect accuracy. The song is dark and cold, with accent passaged being hit along the way. Around the mid-way mark, it slows to a grind, to really allow you to appreciate the level of filth and deep, dark sound.

"Trilobite" is a little bit longer, clocking in at over six-minutes in length. Once again, the thick and chaotic dissonance wastes no time cloaking the town in a dark cloud of smoot that you can't see through for miles. The drummer varies his pace, as the vocalist utters guttural lyrics. The level of fury here is unparalleled. But for me, it sounds more like Black Metal than anything else. But, not minimalized in any way. It's just the basic blueprint for me. There is some loose structure in the chaos, but the tight instrumentation is noteworthy.

Overall, it's a bit hard to judge an album based on just two tracks. But from what I hear, I like the sound. The band are talented musicians, there is no doubt about that. If you listen in between the nooks and crannies you can clearly hear a structure that is built from experience and confidence.
