The Hell We Have Chosen
Strixskog
STRIXSKOG was originally founded by Ærendraca, and the lineup was consistently changing over several years. The band further experimented with different genres and started with dungeon synth and dark ambient albums. However, it recently released a new record that set a new vision and approach to the music and style. "The Hell We Have Chosen" is an epitaph for modern life and society, and it is a call for repentance and inner change. The album art was done by Anna "Crimson Soil" Bantle, and it depicted flagellants during the act of penance. This symbolism resembled the main idea of the new album, and it fully illustrated the sound and atmosphere of its songs. The album has six songs.
The title track is the first. It has a Black Metal sound but is pretty basic. The vocals are screams and the guitar work is center stage, but beyond that, it isn't anything special. "Beasts as Gods" isn't much better. Besides the fast picked guitars, which give it away as Black Meta, and the tortured screams, and backing elements are very thin. This results in an elementary sound which isn't very enjoyable. "I Betrayed Those Whom I Loved" is unfortunately more of the same...thin riffs, elementary drumming, the bass nowhere to be heard, and vocal screams.
"Ashes to Ashes" is a slow grind, with a simple riff...is that the bass I hear buried in the background? This is pretty painful. "Slaves to Darkness" is the shortest, at three-and-a-half-minutes long. There is a little more energy here, and the drummer puts in his time, but the independent nature of the band is really starting to show. "Weeping and Silent Sorrow" closes the album. Besides some light moments of melody, it is fairly forgettable. It figures they would save the best song for last, but it does not save the album. There isn't anything more to say.
