On August 7, 2020, STILLBIRTH released "Revive The Throne." Brutal death metal band STILLBIRTH was formed April 1999 in Hagen, Germany. Since then, they have released six full-length albums, with "Revive The Throne" marking their seventh. With such long history and many albums in their discography, STILLBIRTH has definitely found their desired sound and stuck with it.
STILLBIRTH is undoubtedly memorable, full of heavy and groovy slam riffs. It's a sound rooted somewhere within the genres of brutal death metal and slam. The vocalist alternates between the low growls of death metal and the pig squeals of deathcore and slam. The drummer is insane, blasting through the album.
The album is off to a good start. Opening track "Degraded To Mutilation" wastes no time in starting the party. Next, the titular track "Revive The Throne" continues with absolutely brutal slams and breakdowns. The next three tracks similarly begin with clips from notable films and shows before unleashing an onslaught of chugging slams, growls, and blast beats.
The band isn't just memorable for their slams, they embrace other elements in their sound. For example, a part of "Eating Flesh Of The Objector" that caught my attention was around the minute mark when the bass guitars get a bit of a solo. "Echoes Of The Trumpets" features probably the only extended guitar licks on the album.
Overall, I recommend STILLBIRTH's "Revive The Throne" to fans, both old and new. To their old fans, their sound has not changed much, with a bit of technicality and a lot of slam riffs. To new listeners, this album is the matured and developed sound of slam and a good primer for those unfamiliar with the genre.
