The Glare
Spriggan Mist

Sometimes I like to try out a band that I usually wouldn't consider, but seeing as how I'm liking more and more different musical styles as my age progresses, I felt that I needed to take a chance. According to the information sheet that comes with the music SPRIGGAN MIST is a band from Bracknell in the UK that plays Progressive Rock/Folk. If you then open the homepage of the band, you will see that they categorise themselves as a Pagan Folk Rock band. Well, let me put your mind at ease, they are both right. All the elements mentioned are available on "The Glare", which is their seventh studio album to date. And although they have made so much music, it is my first encounter with SPRIGGAN MIST.
The thing is, with everything that is going on within the music that is available on "The Glare", in those 43 minutes you are so trying to decipher and analyse what SPRIGGAN MIST are playing, until you realise that yes, they have all the influences mentioned in the paragraph above, but that it also is very clear that these musicians are very experienced in playing together. Everything seems to sound very natural, as if it hasn't taken any effort. And then you start to listen more carefully, and you have to admit that they don't have a problem in filling quite lengthy songs in a very familiar manner, making you miss the fact of how much time they take up.
But it also makes you realise that even though these are very good musicians who are capable of writing, playing and recording good music, there is something missing. Every tune has enough to keep you on your toes, to keep your interest piqued, but when push comes to shove the atmosphere and feel is just too middle of the road, too mediocre. Never are you so intrigued that you feel the need to move to the edge of your seat. You only get short bursts of extra intensity that will make you listen a little more intently. It's like you're listening to a gentle stream that sometimes becomes a little wilder when the rain has been. I would have liked for that bout of excitement to hit me more often than it has. And that is why I have rated "The Glare" as I have. This is a good album and SPRIGGAN MIST is a good band, but they're not setting my world on fire.
