SPECTRVM are a Modern Heavy Metal band from Greece and Blood For Heaven is their debut album released by Sliptrick Records. It opens up with an instrumental track which seems to be a common theme on albums I've reviewed lately. However "Gift of Oizys" is very good indeed with echoey guitar, synths and bass coalescing to create a highly atmospheric track which slowly builds to the opening of the first proper track, the title track "Blood for Heaven". Heavy guitar opens the song and it's very well produced with the bass nicely prominent in the mix and Thanos's vocals very clear. The different rhythmic changes add variety and the vocals and style were reminiscent of SOEN. There's a great solo and the chorus is memorable. The band also isn't pulling any punches with the lyrics:
"You are praying for salvation
And then you kiss your priest
But under his black cassock
He is raping helpless kids."
After the excellent "War of Chameleon" comes "Leviathan" and the longest song on the album at nearly 6 minutes. It opens with an atmospheric clean guitar and bass intro before a kicking grooving riff comes in with a great vocal melody line. Another memorable chorus is accompanied by some nice lead guitar. A slow hypnotic riff plays out with an atmospheric lead guitar across the top before the song changes again before it ends. It is definitely one of my favourite tracks as is the excellent stop-start riffage and vocals of "Rainfire" which has a faster more urgent pace and another great chorus with some soaring vocals and great lead guitar. "Without Borders" ushers in a solemn darker tone on the back of a chugging riff after the more up-tone intro. The chorus is powerful as are the lyrics:
"We can face life without borders in our minds
We are powerful if we are unite
The black , the yellow and the white
We are all human from the same kind."
The album ends on the excellent "Rotten World" which builds up nicely from the atmospheric clean guitar into a heavier vein and another great chorus. Considering this is a debut album, it's a definite triumph. It channels the spirit of SOEN in the vocals and melodies but this is by no means a carbon copy. It does enough to stand out from the crowd and Thanos has a great voice that suits the musicianship and carries the songs on some memorable choruses and a great clear production. I look forward to see what this band does next and they are definitely one to watch.
