Eroded Corridors of Unbeing
Spectral Voice
"Real" Death/Doom quartet SPECTRAL VOICE formed in Denver, Colorado, USA in 2012. To date, they have released four demo albums and two splits, and now present their debut full-length here titled "Eroded Corridors of Unbeing," which contains five tracks.
"Thresholds Beyond" is the opening track. Devastatingly slow and deep in range, and with a muzzled production, the guttural vocals are about as far from low C as they could possibly be. Momentary lapses of chaos rear up here and there, but the extended length of most of the guitar chords is significant. Don't look for even a fleeting thought that there might be a glimpse of light somewhere, as the blackness is as nearly as cold as absolute zero. "Visions of Psychic Dismemberment" is a fourteen-minute beast. Devoid of melody, it is the antithesis of pop music in every way. All the churches have long been burned, and the sterile bleakness of what is left of the charred wooden rafters is stark and flagrant. Blood curling screams and eerie whispers and background noise at times make for an even more vicious sound.
"Lurking Gloom" is a short five-minute track, mostly instrumental. Here some clean guitar notes assemble a more patterned line of melody, but it is still very dark and cold. The title is very fitting, as that feeling of suspense that makes the hair raise on the back of your neck rears up. "Terminal Exhalation of Being" is an eight-minute affair of irreparable despair. The black hole it creates in your world is an ever growing void that threatens to swallow all of your hopes and dreams through the end of time. "Dissolution" is a nine-minute closing song. More of that despondence and worthlessness pour over you, covering you with its icy touch. What the album lacks in diversity, it makes up for with intensity and purity. When you talk about an authentic form of a sub-genre of music, it doesn't get much more real than this. There are absolutely no frills and it embodies the very meaning of Doom and Death.
