SOULCASTER's take on fantasy-inspired metal, the five track EP "Maelstrom Of Death And Steel," is the product of Andreas S. who provides vocals and plays all instruments on the Dying Victims Productions release (August 28, 2020). In "Maelstrom Of Death And Steel," the Belgian act, whose influences include CIRITH UNGOL, MANILLA ROAD, SLOUGH FEG, ETERNAL CHAMPION, SUMERLANDS, and VISIGOTH, has made what could be considered a concept album of sorts, inspired as it was by Branden Sanderson's fantasy novel series "The Stormlight Archive." In that series, a soulcaster is a device powered by gems that changes matter or objects into different forms. Listening to this album it seems like Andreas' soulcaster is a guitar, which he uses to change his ideas into strong rhythms and eclectic solos.

There was much to like about the 22 minutes of "Maelstrom Of Death And Steel," particularly SOULCASTER's variety of musical stylings, which include a mixture of metal, goth, and punk elements and, as alluded to above, the fantastic guitar playing. That being noted, this reviewer thought two things detract from the overall performance. The drums are mixed in a manner that variously distracts from the other instrumental parts, namely some pretty catchy guitar rhythms and riffs. Additionally, Andreas' echoey vocals are easily obscured by the instrumentation, making them hard to discern, especially as they are often mixed into the aural background. He seemingly tells fantastical tales throughout the album, unfortunately his storytelling is hard to understand.

Several tracks on "Maelstrom Of Death And Steel" stand out. "Shardbearer" opens with some stark guitar playing that transitions into a driving intro. The rhythm guitar work is easily reminiscent of what might be heard on classic OZZY and DIO albums. There is a nice hooky tempo change that catches the listener's attention and the guitar solo shows Andreas' can play with clarity at speed. "The Wretch" also features propulsive guitar work, as well as a cool little hook. Perhaps the most musically diverse of "Maelstrom Of Death And Steel's" tracks is "The Heretic's Apprentice." There is a lot going on in this song, from its grand, almost regal, intro, to punkish stylings, to elements of classic metal, to sparseness giving way to musical denseness. A definite testament to SOULCASTER's versatility.

Despite my comments on the mixing and vocals, I enjoyed "Maelstrom Of Death And Steel." In many respects, I considered it a "guitar album," with Andreas' playing being a consistent highlight throughout. He evidences a variety of techniques, often able to rapidly play some intricate music. SOULCASTER's range of stylistic influences also stand out, not only over the course of the album but sometimes during individual songs. A strong initial offering, I look forward to hearing what SOULCASTER brings to the table in the future.
