Soulbound - Towards the Sun (Reissue) album cover

Industrial metal band SOULBOUND have re-released their loved album "Towards the Sun" with additional live tracks and covers. The album starts off with a pretty little instrumental intro track, but the band quickly shows they are ready to get down and dirty with vocalist Johnny Stecker screaming "Let's go!" in the opening of "Halloween." I wasn't sure if I was going to be sold on this album based on this song just because it's not really my style of music, which sucked because I love the holiday. I did like the guitar solo and the spooky music played near the end.

I dug the aggressive opening in the title track "Towards the Sun" and the opening scream in "Broken Pieces." While there's nothing wrong with Stecker's clean vocals, I really loved it when the band went full on heavy. I thought the music felt more like my style when the screams hit. "Broken Pieces" and "Curse of Vanity" were my two favorite songs on the album. I even thought the instrumental interlude "Sunrise" was pretty cool and a lot of times I'm not super into interludes. "Unleashed Aporia" is an incredibly fun song too. I think the chillout mix of "Down in Destruction" created a beautiful chorus for the song. It's basically just a stripped down version of the original. There are a lot of moments throughout this album where I thought this band reminds me a lot of IN FLAMES, especially later in IN FLAMES and especially when it comes to vocals. But then you get to a song like "Addicted to Hell," which has a very ROB ZOMBIE-esque vibe.

I think the addition of bonus tracks to this re-release really adds a lot to the album in terms of quality. I enjoyed the live songs and the covers. I think I actually enjoyed the latter half of the album the most. Even as weird and different as the cover of "Grandpa's Groove" is, it's oddly fun. I especially enjoyed the cover of "Two Face." Overall, this is a pretty successful re-release that fans will surely appreciate.
