I can tell you very little about SONG OF ANHUBIS.  They come from the Basque region of Spain. They came to life in 2012.  "Reversed Reflection" is their second full length album, and not a whole lot else.

On doing my research they were described as Symphonic and Gothic.  They have a powerful female vocalist, and therefore based upon that little information, my assumption was another NIGHTWISH sounding band of a certain type, I'm sure you know where my thoughts were taking me.

Then I turned on the music, and oh boy was I wrong.  Ok the electronica of the intro perhaps gave us clues as to the direction, and to be honest the first proper song "Lonely Echoes" is perhaps the closest to that Symphonic Metal trope you get, all be it with a more modern  "feel" to the beat, it doesn't really represent how different, modern and yes progressive the album sounds.

Next song "Misantropia" gives us more of a steer in the direction.  With the obvious drum loops and programmed beats, detuned guitars and "modern" Metal screamed vocals mixed amongst Rey's operatic stylings, you get the impression this is not a Gothic album.

"Vestiges Of Life" is one of my favorite songs on the album.  The strong modern beat and rythium with Rey's hypnotic refrains and what I can only describe as a metal rap creeping in there.

Another stand out track for me is "Hyper Somnia".  Starting with a simple piano refrain and the beautiful restrained vocal, sung I assume in Spanish.  As the song progresses more layers build up, but at no time does it become bloated or overblown.  A finely constructed simple, fresh, modern ballad.  A truly fabulous piece of music.

"Suicide Nation" was another one which stood out for me.  It is a real modern with an electronically driven beat with an eastern flavor.  The vocals often feel at odds with the music stylistically, and that itself works brilliantly.  A rock song you can definitely dance to.

"Lethal Lens" in some ways is the opposite of "Suicide Nation" with the guitars back being the focus, with sufficient keys and sounds to keep it fresh, but a more traditional, yet very modern sound.

For me this works best when it is being different and almost experimental in the sound, which thankfully is most of the time.  There are times when I does border on passages sounding a bit similar, but not so much it takes away from the highs.  Also the loops and noises are not over used .  And Rey's operatic stylings do not become over-wrought or hysterical, and work well in contrast at times to the music.

Not really my thing, but I was very surprised and thoroughly enjoyed something different.

This is definitely not my idea of "Gothic".
