Affinity governs proximity. I won't explain-just think on it. I won't explain it but take a minute to think on it. Or not. It's a simple and beautiful principle. Not only does is hold up as an organizing principle, but it also explains why so many solid Stoner Rock and Metal bands come out of Sweden. Segue to SLEEPWULF. No umlat. That's how you know they're Stoner Rock and not Stoner Metal. Not really. But really.
SLEEPWULF is a foursome out of Kristianstad, Sweden. On February 18, 2022 they released their second full-length album, "Sunbeams Curl"-the quirky, vague title capturing something of the band's aesthetic. Sonically, you can describe their sound as Stoner Rock with a 70's Doom vibe. Thematically, it's mostly occult and social commentary. The social commentary isn't a surprise, but its juxtaposition against the backdrop of occultism is as evocative today as it was when BLACK SABBATH pioneered it in 1969. Adding to the contrast is Owen Robertson's well-enunciated vocals inflected with that distinct Swedish flat articulation reminiscent of Magnus Pelander (WITCHCRAFT).
"Sunbeams Curl" comprises eight tracks with a runtime of just over 38 minutes. So, a short full-length. It's a good album in the same way that white bread is good-a consistent and even flavor, filling enough but fairly plain. Track after track, the performances across all instruments are strong; the production is well crafted, picking up subtle nuances and maintaining keen separation; Robertson's vocals, as noted, are very clean though very vanilla. Add all that up and the summation is uniform and controlled-one might even say restrained. A+ on execution; C on feeling.
With that said, my list of standout tracks is brief. I'll go with "Stoned Ape" and "Tyrant Song." There are no real clunkers, but not a lot to compel you to hit the repeat button. "Toad Licker Mushroom Picker" tried my patience, but the solo and the gorgeous bass line (especially when Viktor Sjöström breaks loose and just runs) redeemed it.
All in all, "Sunbeams Curl" will satisfy Rock fans and likely disappoint Metalheads. Just not enough viscera and grit. Very thoughtful, very deliberate, very steady. In the end, also very bridled. There are moments of flashing brilliance-an emotive solo here, an unscripted bass flourish there-but not quite enough to stir my demons out of their slumber.
