SKULL ABOVE THE CANNON is a Stoner / Folk Rock band from London, UK and they are here with their second release "Dago". The trio first formed in 2014, and released their self-titled debut record in 2015. The band is currently signed to Milky Bomb Records.
The song that starts the album off is "Away" and it starts with some guitar riffs and a bassline that has some riffs as well. The vocals consist of a mixture of Alternative Metal and Rock. The next song is "Devils Tail" and the beginning really emphasizes on the toms from the drums. The bassline in the background I think holds everything together fairly well, as the vocalist carries on and does his thing. "B. The Fish" begins with a voice sample then enters a guitar riff a lot like the one in the first song. Toward the end of the track the instruments slow down then come back hard hitting. "Rosa On The Train" is just an album filler song because it is filled with samples of noises but then it leads us into the next track "Trip To Descent". What really stands out to me with this track, are the guitar chugs and power chords that repeat throughout.
"Kaori" begins slightly heavier than the rest of the tracks and that caught my attention. The vocals are also of a different style in the beginning but then they go back to the alternative style that he favors. "Serenata" is another filler song on the album that launches you into "Burst". The final track on the record is "When the Music is Over" and it begins the same away and has the same features and qualities as the previous tracks. Nothing really stood out to me here.
All in all, I think SKULLS ABOVE THE CANNON have a lot of talent in them as a trio but I can't help but see the predictability of the songs and how they all seem to sound the same in one way or another. But this is only their second release as a band so there is room for improvement for sure.
