The Oath
Six Burning Knives
From Art Gates website, “SIX BURNING KNIVES were founded in Castellón (Spain), defining their style as versatile in the metal genre and subgenres, making their music personal and distinctive. Their artistic work takes care of the aesthetics, all kinds of graphic and audiovisual material or props at all levels, offering a unique experience in all senses. In the same way, they distinguish themselves by offering in each and every one of their live performances a powerful staging full of rawness and boundless energy.” The album has nine songs.
“Love” is first. The opening tones are heavy and aggressive, with a distinct choppy rhythm. The vocals are mostly harsh, but there are semi-cleans in the chorus, along with some melody. “Love is the only ghost I know” is a cool lyric. “The Ascent” has a similar pace and sound. As far as a genre is concerned, I would loosely call it “core,” although I know the connotation that comes with this. Still, the melodies are strong, and the bass work dexterous. “M.A.N.” has some tense and dark tones in the opening, followed by a Nu-Metal sound in the verses. So far, there are three burning songs, and the band shows no sign of slowing down.
“Before the Throne” has more of those Modern Metal elements in the riff, and the way the vocals are delivered…that heavy cadence. It makes the vocals sound a bit stiff for me. “Crying an Ocean” has a slow and deliberate grind, although the one feature that has been present in every song now is the rapped cadence in the vocals. They move the album into the “Modern Metal” category. “War” has a similar sound. One thing that the band consistently brings is energy, but they could use work on their diversity. “The Void” has some nice, solid melodies in the chorus, but what needs work are their riffs. They are mostly open notes, or based there, and they need to be expanded.
“Primitive” closes the album, and that’s what I was waiting for…a song with a heavy backbone and a unique flair of melodies. Overall, there are some nice moments on the album, but the band seems bent on driving a similar sound down the listener’s throat. It could be inexperience, or it could be being afraid to take real chances. The band is talented but needs to work in more diversity into the album. As it stands, it just sounds like another Nu-Metal/Core band that listeners just don’t need more of.
