Silent Obsession - Countdown album cover

It's usual in Human Sciences to think that when a cultural movement becomes exhausted, two things can happen: or the movement ceases to exist (think how no one sees a hippie today, besides the strength of the movement on the 60's), or it renew itself to fit on the needs of time. And maybe Death Metal is coming to such point, because with the exception of the titans who created a model of their own and some names, many bands still are playing the genre without trying to expand limits. And the Algerian quartet SILENT OBSESSION must work on a better shape than is presented on their EP "Countdown".

On this three song EP, the old and good Old School Death Metal from the 90's, influenced by names from North American School as MASSACRE, DEATH, MALEVOLENT CREATION, DEICIDE and those who works on a classical model. But the band has potential to deliver something better, because they're in a tendency that is usual for a great part of the bands that are trying to make classic Death Metal. It's not a matter of trying to play another Metal genre, but of playing this one with their hearts. They're not a clone, and don't need to be, so snap out of this and try to expand the limits with your won creativeness. The production was done having in mind that they're a Death Metal act, but with a clear insight that sounding brutal and aggressive doesn't mean to be putrid. And things works on a very good way, give the band the fierce sonority of the genre, but well defined.

After a climatic intro, the band presents "End of an Era", a massive and brutal song with good musical arrangements and rhythmic contrasts (with good grunted vocals and guitars), and the fast and nasty "Exhausted Resource" (that presents a solid and good rhythm created by bass guitar and drums). It's not bad, but it's not different from many other Death Metal bands that are heard today. SILENT OBSESSION has potential to show something better than presented on "Countdown". So let's hope it'll become true on their next release.
