Sigiriya - Darkness Died Today album cover

SIGIRIYA is a Stoner / Doom offering from Wales that are reborn on "Darkness Died Today" since their last album "Return to Earth" that was released in 2011. If the name SIGIRIYA doesn't roll off your tongue quite as nice, you may recall some of the previous projects of the band members of this band like IRON MONKEY and ACRIMONY.

The music rocks you in a very uplifting way. The "Pipes" of Matt Williams are very soulful and pull no punches with the range of melodic singing in each and every song. "Tribe of the Old Oak" is an excellent example of how far his voice can reach. Mr. Williams brings a really inspired and talented instrument into the mix.

Fans of MONSTER MAGNET will be behind this band 100%. There are so much chunky Stoner riffs in songs like "Guided By Mountains" and "Godspeeder" that just make this so enjoyable. The sound is very rugged and has a similar vein of Grunge Rock and Desert Rock but has a certain attitude I will just attribute to the band being Welsh. US Metal bands seem to emulate European metal bands and vise versa. Case in point: SIGIRIYA.

Unfortunately, there can only be one MONSTER MAGNET. The overall quality of this record could be misjudged by people who are already way-too-familiar with this genre of music. This kind of Stoner Metal has enough Blues Rock in it to be palatable to a mainstream audience. This band reminds me an awful lot of the band SEEMLESS, the Stoner-Rock band formed by ex-members of SHADOWS FALL, OVERCAST and KILLSWITCH ENGAGE.

SIGIRIYA joins the rank with current bands carrying the Stoner banner like ASG and WINDHAND. I am unsure at this point how the state of the genre will evolve from this point. For now, I can certainly kick back with SIGIRIYA in the background and drift away into the fog.
