Shadow Limb - Burn Scar album cover

Stoner Rock seems to be in abundance in the Rock scene, because many bands are playing the genre or using its elements clearly on their works, maybe to given an organic rough feeling to their music. But this trend is dangerous, because the more bands you have on a genre, the harder will be for them to show their music and to last more than two or three years. And the North American quartet SHADOW LIMB really is one of those good names that deserve to be heard, because "Burn Scar" is really a good release.

They are a Stoner Metal/Rock group with some Progressive Rock influences (due the melodic and introspective moments and technical insight). It's heavy and bitter, but done with a musical care on the instrumental arrangements (although during the aggressive parts, the screaming vocals can disturb the ears). It means that under the crude organic feeling of Stoner Metal/Rock, there's a technical aesthetics ruling their musical work. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Tim Green, "Burn Scar" really has an organic feeling due the crude insight of how it would sound after all the works been done. But don't get the wrong idea: it's really crude, but not to the point that no one could understand.

"Asger Arisen" with its lysergic instrumental voyages, the oppressive raw and greasy ambience of "Maelstroms Rebirth", the mastodonic weight with good melodies of "You Blew It" and of "Cry Off", and the musical contrasts shown on "Rudiger, His Name is Not Important" are their best shots. For those that are into MASTODON's musical work, SHADOW LIMB would be a fine choice, but even for those that are Stoner Metal/Rock fans, "Burn Scar" is really a good release to check.
