Serpent - Possessed By Night album cover

It became reasonably ostensible, and I assure you that this release is of no exception, that the revival of British Metal is on and going strong. Don't bother with the Swedes as a basis people, you can head down to Germany and become aware of an underground movement, loyal hectic fans of NWOBHM, taking a form of its own, nothing that will sounds as shameful. Flushing an obscure Speed / Thrash band down the toilet, a twosome from the streets of Leipzig, committed to form a new musical presence, united by the hooks and snoops of the old British Metal sentries with morsels of Speed, think of SATAN as best possible influence, along with the begrimed features of the first wave of Black Metal, inaugurating a crispy ripping al'a MERCYFUL FATE and VENOM. A while ago this twosome, named SERPENT, signed to High Roller Records, for the reissue of their previous Demo release, as an extended edition, "Possessed By Night". Voices from the past, along with an occult turmoil and wrath, haunting my senses once again, a puritanical feel with seething grime, the lord of the underworld will surely notice.

Roughly recorded, as I expected from such a kind of demo, and even with a low quality presentation, "Possessed By Night" brightly captures the blackness of early Metal and its ambiguous instigations, a sort of malignancy that touched NWOBHM back in the day, turning it into something a bit enigmatic, bile but with still majorly relying on the foundation of the music's direction. The songwriting is pretty straightforward, neck breaking stuff, leaning towards being a riff and rhythm based originations. Vent, in charge of the chockablock electrical guitars / bass circuits, revamped the vintage British steel of early 80's and late 70's JUDAS PRIEST riffery embroiled with an occult flavored blackened Heavy Metal meltdown. Tongue, skinning the drums along with being a rather competent vocalist, didn't provide any unique drum roles, serving a traditional drumming while also speeding it up at times letting off some steam. However, as a vocalist, this guy has what it takes, yet I believe that better produced, his voice will become even dominant.

"Possessed by Night" and "The Stranger" will have you incorporating and feeling the Heavy Metal rawness at its best of performance. Even if truthfully still far from perfection, this duo steamrolled with great riffs of an old school mania, surgical soloing preaching of old times, impressive drumming that turned out to be dynamic and quality vocals with ample prospect. Covering the classic tune "Heavy Metal Ears" of the Dutch veterans PICTURE, took a positive turn for SERPENT, stimulating the old tune in a solid manner. Lastly, this album, still underdone and bleeding hard, is fine showcase of early Heavy Metal encasing an old vibe that is never enough nowadays.
